THE PORTOLAN GROUP CONDUCTS BROWARD COUNTY SCHOOLS STUDY

The Portolan Group, along with its partner, Grau & Company, has spent the last year providing an analysis of and reorganizing the maintenance department of the nation's fifth largest school district, the Broward County Schools, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The Operations Services Committee of the Broward County School District selected The Portolan Group and Grau & Company over five other companies to conduct an intense analysis of the operations of the district maintenance department.

“We are pleased to have been chosen over such nationally known and prestigious companies as KPMG and Ernst & Young,” said The Portolan Group’s founder and president Phil Stover. “We believe it is the combination of our school district support services experience, together with the accounting expertise of Grau & Company that made the difference.”

The Broward County contract is the largest single contract in the history of The Portolan Group. Terry Burgess, Executive Vice-President of The Portolan Group added, “The award of this study validates all the hard work we have done as a company. No one else combines our knowledge of school support services with practical hands-on experience as educators."

The study and reorganization has been conducted over the past school year. It has involved intense analysis of operational methods, best practices, and staffing. The study has been followed by providing assistance in the implementation of our recommendations. The Maintenance Department has been reorganized into a Physical Plant Operations Division composed of five departments: Maintenance, Custodial and Grounds, Support Services and Energy Management. The entire reorganization is being accomplished in a manner that is cost neutral to the district's operating budget.

The following is a quote from Sylvester Davis, Director, Maintenance Department: "As the Grau/Portolan Group approaches the final assessment phase for the Broward County School's District Maintenance Department, our management staff would like to express sincere thanks for a job well done. The Department was impressed with the level of expertise and professionalism your company provided our school district". Your group demonstrated a broad range of expertise in the area of maintenance operations. This provided our staff with a high comfort level for the services you were rendering. The goal of all parties is to help the Broward County School District maintenance department become a world-class organization."
